Day 21 on the road - Lancashire la la la!

Libraries rock! Writing this blog post from Carnforth Library, Lancashire. Funny that I have been in four branch libraries since I left Vancouver.

Sheerness Library, Kent
Minster Library, Kent
Burnt Oak Library, London
and here.

I arrived back in Carnforth from Ambleside in the Lake District yesterday evening. I was in the Lake District for two days proper, but have been hiking since I arrived in Carnforth last week.

Last Friday hiked to the Lion and the Lamb, on Helm Crag. On Monday I hiked to Fairfield Crag and also St Sunday Crag, the latter by mistake after I missed the path. With lots of daylight and beautiful sunny weather I had time to relax and sit down to admire the views at various points in the day.

The Lake District is superb. Lots of access points. No real wildlife concerns - i.e bears. Yesterday though had to wait for 15 mins to get through part of a field that would have taken 30 seconds were it not for cattle and young calves. Swam in part of Lake Windermere briefly, almost glacial cold, chased by curious rather than attacking swans. Sat on a bench dedicated to the memory of Sarah Faulkner in the beautiful graveyard of Holy Trinity Brathay. At the church itself a woman made me coffee and served up homemade cakes and biscuits. Northern hospitality!

Back to London tomorrow en route to Kent and Faversham beer fest Sunday.

Rocks, fossils and CD burns

That has been pretty much my focus this week. I have been walking on the beach between Minster and Leysdown every day for the last three days.

I have found some great rocks. The beach is characterized by erosion. Fortunately the long hot summer, not now, that England has had means the mud, so dangerous in winter is completely dry and safe to walk on. I am still treading carefully though.
Yesterday had to turn back as the tide turned.

It is great watching the subtle but powerful forces of nature. The combination of the sea, the wind, rain and sun continue to tear down the cliff. As they do the London Clay soil releases fossils. No buildings are currently at risk but a post office building had to be abandoned as did an ice cream shop. And way back in the past was an abbey. Now perhaps a mile out to sea. I don't know if the building was taken down prior to slipping, but the site is a mile out.

At the shore's edge is the second world war lookout towers. You can scramble down onto them but it's a dicey scramble.

Sheerness library is affording me the opportunity to burn CDs.

That's all for now.

Day 2 On The Road, Seattle

Yes folks I'm in the U S of A!

Took the short bus trip from Vancouver to Seattle yesterday morning. Arrived feeling groggy after two nights of little sleep. Don't worry or perhaps you should, I've been a "good" boy. Blog rocking Radio is Radio, and editing in Adobe kept me up late.

Dad gave me my early morning wake up call and then it was off I went. A walk through the DTES, my hood to the bus depot where I chilled, literally, for an hour. I was then ready for basting and the ride to Seattle. I like it here, nice city.

I am at the YHA. Spent yesterday with a guy from Conneticut and we ended up hanging out most of the day, random walked aroud town talking about wives, girlfriends, work, life, travel. We finally found a place to eat close to the Hostel in and then realised that it was the Chinese restaurant attached to the Hostel. The Onion pancake the chef made triggered the fire alarm and the hostel was evacuated.

Fire trucks turned up and a party including twelve pre-teen school girls had their photo taken with the firefighters. Heroes!

Last Call music

Whoa! It's still daylight outside, well I guess the evening will close in soon but at 7.24pm I am well happy with how much light we still have. It certainly makes life easier.

One thing is for sure though and that is when Last Call goes on air on Vancouver Cooperative Radio, www.coopradio.org it is always dark.

I've been listening to a lot of music online at at ReverbNation this week so I am looking forward to playing some of those tunes. In addition I am getting ever closer to having some kind of filing system for what is now three enviro friendly bags of CDs.

I have tried to grade the music as much as is possible.

Opening tracks - this changes each week, three to four discs that I will start show with. The danger is though I can change my mind at the last minute and go for something totally different. Paul Westerberg is up there right now.

Then comes the A List
This is actually the bulk of the stuff that is heard on Last Call.
But the list is split between
dance sounds
indie/pop
rock/punk

So right there I think you can see how the overlaps and considerations that go into making the A List
That's not forgetting the singer songwriters that also are in the A-List.

The B List
Well there's a smaller contingent of CDs there that come out on special occasions, longer shows, etc. Currently residing in the B List is Everything But The Girl's Eden.
A great album but not something Last Call listeners need to hear that often.

There is a C-List
Pete Doherty, is there.

C-List material is one step from retirement.

Tent City at 58 West Hastings

The Olympic tent village is well established at the notorious Concord Pacific property across from Save On Meats (58 West Hastings), proposed for condos. The lot is a half-block long with buildings at either end. It is fenced in with chain link and now has banners and tarps strung along. The irony of this site is perfect: Concord, one of the largest real estate company in Canada gave up one of their vacant lots of VANOC tents on False Creek and now 58 W Hastings is nicely covered in tents too. The demands at the site are: more social housing, stop gentrification and criminalizing those living in poverty or homeless.

Rider from Citywide Housing Coalition estimated about 25 tents last night about 50 who stayed the night last night. Many of us stayed at the campfire and the 50 gal drum fire until late. Last night there was a strong UBC student/Stop War presence but also strong Power of Women, Streams of Justice presence. Three CCAP members chose to take a night away from their crappy hotel rooms and sleep out. Two CCAP members who are homeless went back to their shelters late at night because of the rain.

Bernie and Stella from the Power of Women group worked out a list of things they need as soon as possible:

Firewood

Chairs

Hats

Scarves

Mitts

Socks

Fresh fruit

A hatchet

A mallet for tent pegs

Requests from other squatters:

Plastic twine to string tarps

A guitar for Rickie Lavallie

Cigarettes

Requests listed on Tent Village website:

Tents

Tarps

Wood

Sleeping bags

Blankets

The tent village website also has links to recent media articles.

Greetings from Vancouver # 1

Clog the Heart of the city. Autonomous demo, pretty much a non-starter.

Peaceful until Cambie Street. From then on metro and other newspaper boxes began to litter the streets.

Others were used as missiles into the Hudson Bay store window, TD Bank. Some grafitti on olympic vehicles.

Riot police with large guns appeared on Georgia. Peaceful demo well and truly over.

Saw several people being led away - cherry picking.

A charge by police on activists further down Georgia failed.

A later charge managed to get activists surrounded, on Robson.

Pretty much cat and mouse by this time. Protestors chants "Let them go" or "Peace" ringing a bit hollow given the violence post Cambie.

olympic highlights

Australians defiant and fly the Kicking Kangaroo flag. Vanoc pissed off. The Aussies win.
Doping - athletes can forget their Olympics.
Cypress Mtn has considerable lack of snow. Snow being trucked in from as far as Manning Park.
Athletes denied practice time on Cypress. Athletes practicing in the Okanagan.
Commercial Drive 1 Torch Relay 0. Olympic flame gets blocked by hundreds of people on the Drive.
Luge athlete dead hours before opening ceremonies

Belated birthday gifts

Well it's ten days since I had my landmark birthday and today feels like the breather, the breath of fresh air that I've been waiting for.

School is on 'olympic break', and for me who chose not to have any involvement with the olympic broadcast work, it is a welcome rest.

With pancakes made, coffee and fruit and The Dead Letters on the cd player things are good.

My thinking is turning to the prospect of paid radio work and internships, in Grand Prairie and Vancouver/Winnipeg respectively.

Yes I could soon be on the move. But first I am going to enjoy this weekend of resistance. I cycled up to the Drive too late to see the people take over the Drive but still time enough to see about 40 anarchists walk back onto the Drive at Grant (I think).

All the old faces were out today, Sam Sullivan stuck on a side street, with half a dozen police in guard.

The fun continues later at the Art Gallery.

Peace

Helicopters, traffic and non communication

Welcome to Vancouver, welcome to the home of the 2010 Winter Games.

It is not pretty out there. My angst towards the Games heightened by lack of sleep thanks to a helicopter buzzing over Victory Park last night for more than one hour.

Resigned to the fact that I wasn't going to get a decent sleep I got up and went for a walk to find out what all the noise was about. Walking west on Water Street, saw the inevitable flashing lights at Cambie and Hastings.

Only when I asked, the dozen police walking in line combing Victory Park, would what has happened be of any interest to the media, did I get a decent answer - "a stabbing in the park". Thank you.

My first question "What happened?" was met with jokes between themselves. You've got to love the VPD.

Note for transit users - don't ride the buses on Main between Hastings and Terminal. It's better to walk. The gridlock caused by the closing of the viaducts is insane. Why did they close the viaducts?

Night biking in 2010 #1

My first real night biking of the year. I cycled from Gastown to the BCIT campus in Burnaby, in about 30 to 40 mins. I wasn't paying exact attention to the times.

Why you might ask? Well I am reading the news this morning on www.evolution1079.com

I start reading the news at 7am. I was up at 3.23 and started making pancakes and coffee shortly after listening to Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted.

Then it was a brisk bike ride through the DTES, Strathcona to Adanac over Commercial, Nanaimo, Windermere to Boundary south Douglas south east to Gilmore sth again all the way to Canada Way.

No wildlife tonight unless you count the blokes I saw walking home. Yesterday cycling to BCIT from Gilmore skytrain station I saw a Red Winged Blackbird at Still Creek Drive. I heard it before I saw it.

Look forward to two new Culture Connections at myspace.com/garyjarvis in the next couple of days.

Cheers all
